When stop signs, officially designated, are erected upon streets or highways intersecting any through street at the entrance thereto, or upon any other street or highway at the entrance to any intersection, every operator of a vehicle and every operator of a moving vehicle shall stop at the stop line; provided, however, that in the event there is no stop line, then the operator shall stop at the nearest line marking the crosswalk at such entrance; and provided further, that in the event there is no such line, then the operator shall stop at the nearest property line of such through street or other street or highway to be entered. The “stop line” shall be a clearly visible white line extending across the right half of the roadway and placed on streets and highways having such stop signs. (Ord. 413 § 10-12.1, 1965)

The board of supervisors shall require the county engineer to erect and maintain appropriate signs, devices or marks to be placed and maintained on each street intersecting a “Through Street” designated in this chapter, such signs, devices or marks to bear the word “Stop” and to be located in such position and to be provided with letters of a size to be clearly legible from a distance of at least one hundred feet along the street intersecting the through street. All such signs shall be illuminated at night or so placed as to be illuminated by street lights or by the headlights of approaching motor vehicles. (Ord. 413 § 10-12.7, 1965)

Every operator of a vehicle traveling upon any street intersecting any through street designated in this chapter shall bring such vehicle to a full stop at the place where such street meets the prolongation of the nearest property line of such through street, subject, however, to the direction of any traffic-control sign or signal or any police officer at such intersection. The operator of a vehicle emerging from an alley, driveway, or building shall stop such vehicle immediately prior to operating onto a sidewalk or onto the sidewalk area extending across such alley, driveway or building, yielding the right-of-way to any pedestrian as may be necessary to avoid collision, and upon entering the roadway shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching on the roadway. No operator of a vehicle shall enter an intersection or a marked or unmarked crosswalk unless there is sufficient space on the other side of the intersection or crosswalk to accommodate the vehicle he is operating without obstructing the passage of other vehicles or pedestrians, notwithstanding any traffic-control signal indication to proceed. (Ord. 413 § 10-12.10, 1965)

The operator, engineer, or person in charge of any locomotive, truck, or other vehicle, whether operated on stationary rails or roadways, used in agricultural or industrial work, shall not cause or permit such locomotive, truck, or other vehicle to enter upon or cross any highway without first stopping and yielding the right- of-way to any vehicle crossing or about to cross the grade crossing or road intersection, or which is approaching so closely on the highway as to constitute an immediate hazard, but having so yielded may proceed; provided, however, that when a flagman or watchman has stationed himself approximately in the center of the highway in close proximity to the tracks, road intersection or crossing, displaying a red flag not less than sixteen inches square, or a red lantern which shall be plainly visible for a distance of five hundred feet from both sides of the tracks, crossing or road intersection, and in like manner having signaled approaching traffic to stop, or when such crossing is equipped with an automatic warning signal device approved by the chief of police, stopping of the locomotive or other industrial equipment shall not be required, and all other vehicles approaching shall yield the right-of-way to such locomotive or industrial equipment.
